✊🏽 Racial Identity, Healing & Trauma
🌿 Your Story Deserves to Be Heard
Race and identity shape how we move through the world — how we’re seen, how we’re treated, and how we see ourselves. For many people of color, daily experiences of bias, discrimination, or invisibility can create a weight that’s hard to name but always felt.
At Mara’s Lighthouse, we recognize that these experiences aren’t just “stress.” They’re often racial trauma — emotional and psychological wounds that develop from living in systems or moments where your safety, worth, or belonging were questioned.
Here, you don’t have to explain or justify your experiences. You are seen, validated, and supported — just as you are.
💭 Understanding Racial Trauma
Racial trauma, sometimes called race-based traumatic stress, can result from one major event or the accumulation of many smaller moments over time. It can come from direct experiences — like discrimination, profiling, or violence — or from witnessing the suffering of others who look like you.
This type of trauma can leave deep emotional imprints that affect confidence, safety, and connection. Common symptoms may include:
Chronic anxiety, anger, or sadness
Numbness, disconnection, or mistrust
Difficulty sleeping or concentrating
Hypervigilance in certain spaces
Feelings of shame, self-doubt, or exhaustion
Avoiding places or conversations that feel unsafe
A sense of being unseen or unheard
Racial trauma doesn’t only exist in the moment — it can also be intergenerational, passed down through families and communities via stories, silence, and survival. Healing it takes time, compassion, and safe, culturally aware support.
✊🏾 Exploring Racial & Cultural Identity
Understanding who you are — and who you’re becoming — is a lifelong journey. Racial and cultural identity can be a source of strength, pride, and connection, but it can also bring questions, confusion, or conflict — especially for those navigating bicultural or multiracial experiences.
In therapy, we provide space to:
Explore your racial or cultural identity with curiosity and acceptance
Process experiences of discrimination, code-switching, or belonging
Address imposter syndrome or “not enough” feelings tied to race or culture
Reclaim your sense of voice, pride, and empowerment
Connect with your cultural roots as part of healing
We help clients rediscover the parts of themselves that may have been muted by survival — and learn to take up space authentically and unapologetically.
🌱 How Therapy Helps
Healing racial trauma isn’t about “getting over it.” It’s about finding your footing in a world that hasn’t always made space for you. Therapy provides tools to help you:
Name and process the pain of racial stress and trauma
Build coping skills for navigating racism and systemic barriers
Reconnect with safety and confidence in your body
Strengthen boundaries and self-advocacy
Rebuild community and belonging
Restore self-worth and inner peace
Our therapists use trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and strengths-based approaches — meeting you with empathy, honesty, and deep respect for your lived experience.
🌿 Our Commitment to Culturally Competent Care

We provide a space where clients of color — particularly those from Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and multiracial communities — can receive care that feels relevant, respectful, and empowering.
Our therapists are trained to address the intersection of race, culture, gender, and identity, understanding how these factors shape every client’s experience of the world.
🌺 Comprehensive Support When You Need It
Racial trauma can affect mental health in many ways — contributing to anxiety, depression, relationship struggles, and burnout. If needed, our team can connect you with individual therapy, group support, or prescriber care within our practice.
Our integrated approach ensures your treatment is consistent, coordinated, and deeply attuned to your needs. You deserve care that honors both your story and your strength.
🌸 Living Fully & Authentically
Healing racial trauma doesn’t mean forgetting the pain — it means freeing yourself from its control.
